Otoplasty
Otoplasty is performed to correct excess protrusion of the ears and place them in a more normal, less conspicuous position. Otoplasty, or ear shaping or ear pinning, is for men, women and children who are not satisfied with the size, shape or the position of their ears. Otoplasty is often performed on children between the ages of four and 14. By undergoing otoplasty with Dr. Michael Spindel, patients can achieve their desired ear shape and contour.
Otoplasty involves reducing the size of the ear cartilage and removing the excess skin, as well as positioning the ears closer to the head. General anesthesia is commonly used for children while adults and young adults often receive local anesthesia with oral sedation. If more extensive work is required, our patients receive general anesthesia and are asleep during the procedure. With one or more common techniques, Dr. Michael Spindel will make a small incision in the back of the ear and a thin strip of skin is removed. The ear cartilage is then sculpted and folded back toward the head to allow the ear to lie flatter against the head and appear normal.
