Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal utilizes laser therapy to clear the ink of tattoos from the skin. Laser therapy is considered as the gold standard in tattoo removal. Despite the numerous advertised tattoo removal methods in the market, laser tattoo removal is considered to be the most effective means to remove tattoos. Laser tattoo removal is comfortable, safe, and effective. However, all patients may not be a good candidate for laser therapy if not, Dr. Michael Spindel would excise the pigmented tissue to remove the tattoo as another option for permanent removal.

During Treatment

During treatment, the laser emits light energy which is directed at the tattoo’s ink. The laser breaks up the ink into tiny particles, which the body eventually absorbs. The sensation of the laser can be compared to a rubber band snapping on the skin; any pain or discomfort can be alleviated by numbing cream. Laser tattoo removal treatments work best on dark colors, such as black, purple, blue, and red. Lighter colors, such as white, yellow, orange, green, and aqua, may take longer or may need more treatments. In fact, these colors may never be completely eliminated. The depth of your tattoo will also affect the number of treatments you need. Factors like the size, location, your ability to heal, how your tattoo was applied and how long it has been in place also determine how fast or how successful the procedure would be. Newer tattoos are generally more difficult to remove than old ones.

After Treatment

After each treatment, your skin may be red and may sting almost like a sunburn for a couple days. However, you should be able to resume normal activities immediately. Keep the treated area dressed and out of the sun for at least 6 weeks, or as long as Dr. Michael Spindel advises. Once the area is healed, you should protect it with sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher whenever it is exposed to the sun.
