Brachioplasty

What is brachioplasty?

A brachioplasty, or an arm lift, is an effective way to reduce the appearance of “bat wings” that often develop on the upper arm as a result of weight loss, gravity and/or the aging process. The drooping of the skin on the upper arm is caused from the stretching of the anchoring system of the upper arm and loss of supporting fat. Brachioplasty, or arm lift surgery, can remove excess tissue and reduce the circumference of the upper arm. This surgical procedure removes excess fat and skin from the upper arm between the elbow and the shoulder, resulting in a leaner, more youthful appearance.

A brachioplasty is typically the best way to restore the slender contour of the upper arm when diet and exercise do not achieve the desired results. A brachioplasty is usually done under general anesthesia. Surgical correction depends on the amount of extra skin and how loose the supporting tissues have become. In order to remove the unwanted skin, an incision is required that runs from near the elbow into the armpit. Dr. Michael Spindel will place the incision in the most inconspicuous location, but some scarring will be visible. Many of our patients benefit from a brachioplasty after massive weight loss causes the excess skin of the arms to hang down. Patients are usually back to work 2-3 weeks after a brachioplasty, being careful not to lift heavy objects for up to 6 weeks after surgery. Most patients find this well worth the boost in confidence they experience when they’re finally able to wear sleeveless dresses without worry.
